Ad critique thread...Views: 1568

I thought it might be a good idea for us to have a place to get an honest critique on our classified ads.
This way we can tweak the ad before we let it out into the world.
Ryze rules do apply here, so if it's inappropriate I will have to delete it.
Only post your ad in this section for critiques.
I'll try to get to everyone's ad as soon as possible. Have fun.

You see how different your 'ad' is to mine, DeAnna? Your ad works great for me because it is in short paragraphs that enable me to take in the benefits (to me) of your service, without devoting much time to it.

In my case, because I am in such a personal business (real estate) - consider that I deal with a product where people undress, clean their teeth, shower, sleep and yes, even become intimate - my ad needs to be more conversational, because I have to build a rapport with the reader.

When writing ads, one's product governs the way that it must be written. The more personal the product, the more important it is to build trust and convey sincerity.

My question to you and other members, DeAnna, is: did my ad paint a picture of me, as a real estate professional?

Yes it certainly did.
It also was concise and to the point. That's what made it effective for me.
Most people don't have a lot of time to devote to reading an ad.
Therefore, the more you can say with fewer words, the better the ad.

I just wanted to remind everyone that we still have an ad critique thread. This is the one place where advertising is allowed.
The one catch is that by posting your ad here, you open yourself to an honest critique of your ad. Don't let that scare you.
It's better to know that there is a problem with your ad here than after you've spent money to run it.

Althea Garner
OK, Glenn..... you're not going to like me for this!

Firstly, there is absolutely nothing that compels me to read this ad! No alluring headlines, no CAPITALS in headings to catch my attention and nothing in the content to grab me!

I understand that you are excited about your product but the object of this exercise is to get ME excited - and I am not!

Secondly, pay attention to punctuation. Use of commas instead of periods, capitals where none are needed and no capitals where one should be used, causes the reader to halt, where they should be flowing to your next point.

I do like how you mention the benefit to the consumer - this is good but you can make more of this technique.

I understand that any normal ad would have color, images etc and I have accounted for that, but try to create more of a visual - the reader should be able to PICTURE what they would look like after taking your products and this should compel them to immediately pick up the phone and place an order!

Speaking of which, you have no call to action (click here or call now!) - don't expect your reader to assume that they should click on your links..... they need to be TOLD what to do! CALL NOW! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ARE YOU AGING PREMATURELY? SEE THOSE LITTLE LINES CREEPING IN UNDER YOUR EYES? These are all statements that your reader will respond to - then tell them what to do.... HAVE YOU PLACED YOUR ORDER YET? CALL NOW!

Also, create a little scarcity ~ THIS SPECIAL OFFER CLOSES ON [date]! Scarcity will have customers beating down your door!

Oh, one last thing..... I wouldn't mix the photographic with the health - it's like chalk and cheese, which causes the reader to go 'oh... they can't make up their minds what product to promote - uh, I guess I won't buy either!'

To use Denise Michaels saying: A confused mind ALWAYS says 'No'! Pick your product category and go with that.

OK..... I'm ducking the tomatoes, now?

Wanna try again?

Lamar, I think you need to give your customers a little more information in your ad. It's not really clear what you expect them to do as a result of reading the ad. What is going to happen when I call the toll free number? Will I get a report? Will I get added to a mailing list?

Marla Martindale
Hi everyone, I am new to this board and would like to get your feedback on my ad. :)

WHAT'S GETTING UNDER "YOUR" SKIN??

Do you have any idea what the manufacturers like Johnson
& Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, etc....are ALLOWED to put
into your everyday products?

Do you know WHY you should take precautions to protect
yourself and your family?

Did you know your skin ABSORBS everything?
That's why the Nicotine and Birth Control patches work so well.

You and your kids use these products each and everyday!!

I challenge all of you to research the ingredients of
the products you have in your house right now....
things like:

Your Toothpaste (ever wonder why it's advised not to swallow it)
Your Mouthwash
Your Body Soap
Your Body Lotion
Your Hand Soap
Your Laundry Soap
Your Fabric Softener
Your Bathroom Cleaner (wear gloves and use in well ventilated areas?? WHAT?? WHY??)
Your Floor Cleaner
Your Kids Shampoo (They even have a warning on these products....did you know that?? Read the bottle)
Your Kids Body Wash (Again, they have a warning on them)
Your Shampoo
Even your Make-Up

All those chemicals are absorbed through the skin and you and your family use them all the time.

Here is a link to watch a video about chemicals in your house. I urge you all to watch it.
It will get under your skin.

http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/media/cleaners_rm_030311.ram

Now you should be really MAD and ready to get those
toxins out of your house TODAY!!

Let me show you how you can protect yourself and your
family and save money by shopping at a better store.
They even have everything delivered to your front door.
And you can even make money at the same time.

WOW, did Walmart, Target or your grocery store ever send
your order to your front door AND send you a check every
month for shopping with them??
Nope, they didn't do that for me either....
But this store WILL!!
AND they Guarantee EVERYTHING....YES EVERYTHING!!

Let me help you make your house a safer place to be for
yourself, your pets, your kids and their friends!!

You owe it to yourself and your family to get MAD!!

Whew.
That was a long ad. It was very informative. I guess the medium that you use would determine how long you make your ad. I just know that most people on the internet have a very short attention span so they may not read your whole ad. Maybe if you bold some words or use more white space, that would make the ad more readable. Just my 2 cents on the ad. Other than it being long, it was pretty good.

Hi DeAnna,
Thank you for your 2 cents. I thought it might be a bit
long but I don't know how else to get the information
out that people need to know. Any suggestions?

As far as the bold and all, can't really do that on here,
but when I use it elsewhere I do.

I appreciate your feedback.

Hi Marla,

I agree with DeAnna in that you could use more white space and more headings to punctuate your ad. This, because with an ad that long, most people are inclined to 'skim' or surface read.

Now, if you were to ask Denise Michaels about your ad, she would say "If the reader is interested in the topic, no ad is too long - but if they are not interested, it can't be too short!"

So, what I am saying is that although your ad is long, this is not necessarily a bad thing!

I think what grabbed me the most was the thought of toxins entering my body through my skin! EEeeeeew! This makes sense especially since you mention the nicotine and birth control patch! I also liked your use of bullet points.

Also, with the cosmetic changes to your copy (which we KNOW is difficult on a Ryze post), your ad would carry that much more punch! We, as Ryze readers, just have to imagine where those cosmetic enhancements would be!

Try using the 'pull' method, rather than the 'push' method - in other words, instead of just stating facts, throw in a couple of questions that the reader will stop and say 'Wow, yes... that's me!" to GRAB your reader and make sure that they read on. Usually we do this in the headings, so that they will read the next paragraph.

So, in all, I thought it was a great ad - good job!

OK, Kimberly... here goes:

I like the fact that it's all on one page, BUT.....

* My first reaction was that the graphic in the banner was squished and that jarred me. On closer scrutiny, I realized that you may have done this to avoid the white background of the 'Higher Level Services' logo bleeding into the blue sky area. Perhaps you could crop some of the graphic?

* I like what you have done with the gray sidebar (next to the body text) - is there any way that you can line up the division between the brown 'Higher Level Services' background and the blue cell, to the right of it. The mal-alignment takes away from the message.

* Being the age that I am, I like the LARGE text (oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!) and I also like the way that you have drawn attention to key points by using red font. Wills being what Wills are (something no-one really believes that they need!!!!) I don't think that you are describing the graveness of the alternative, sufficiently.

You might as an example ask the question "Do you know that your home could go into Probate for two years or more, if your loved one died 'intestate' (without a valid Will), during which time, how would you live?"

You might also consider asking your readers what they would do, if they went into in a coma - would they want the plug pulled? When you can't speak, you are without control! A legal and valid Will, speaks for you.

If you are going to use periods at the end of paragraphs, then use them at the end of every paragraph (after 'Pre-Paid Legal Life Events Plan')

* "ACCESS LINK WILL BE SENT TO EMAIL ADDRESS PROVIDED" ~ change to 'E-MAIL'

* Now, the form:
I am not too happy with your choice of colors, here. Black text on dark blue is difficult to read - consider white text on dark blue. You might also want to space the 'e-mail' field from the 'phone' field like the other fields.

And yes, I did test your hyperlink and IT WORKS! Good job!

A nice web page advertisement - I like it!

I use IE, Kimberly.

The main thing is to have several people critique your ad - more eyes will catch more problems and you will end up with something FANTASTIC!

BTW. Have you considered having a landing page (web page) and then using this (sales letter) as a way to boost your web site?

Hello DeAnna,

Just reading the words "Peach Pecan Pepper Preserve Sauce" make my mouth water!! :-)

The site looks very clean and easy to navigate. I am not sure if it's possible to add pictures to the front. That would get people even more hungry :-)

One thing I would change right now is just add one line of space between the paragraphs to make it easier to read.

Hope this helps,

When I have my house a little quieter, I will submit an ad. I will try to keep it concise....I don't think I do a bad job, but it's always better to get someone elses opinion.

Hi Carole,

It's a good, clear ad. I do like one ad - one business. I spent some time looking through your website. I like a simple, one business website with a lead capture. You need to talk to people. Could you do a series of websites on Free Webs for instance? Very simple and no cost.

Thanks Sylvia for the critique on my ad. I take it you don't like the website. I was working on bravenet, and wet paint on something....but 80% of affiliates, that have more than one business...like I do, do have all their businesses on one site. What do you mean I need to talk to people? I'm not sure I understand.

Hi Carole,
Sorry. I meant (talk to people) that you need to capture their information to establish a relationship and encourage them to join your business. You're doing a great job building the site.
