Expand Your Connections Through Online Networking

Francois Gossieaux is the founder of a small software company in Boston. When he heads to San Francisco in a few weeks for an appointment with his first client, he'll also meet with a handful of venture capitalists and potential customers.
What's unusual about the subsequent meetings is that all are with contacts Mr. Gossieaux met by networking with people who belong to LinkedIn, an online-networking service colleagues invited him to join last summer.
LinkedIn and similar Web sites -- Ryze, Friendster, Spoke and EntreMate, to name a few -- represent the newest trend in networking. They're based on the theory of "six degrees of separation" -- the idea that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else, somehow, by just six people.
To some, these services are the greatest thing to happen to communication since the telephone. Others view them as too huge or somehow disconnected.
