Gary,
Regarding Twitter (a micro-blog) as compared to regular blogs there are a ton of third-party applications. Those third-party applications seem to be growing all the time.
When I began using Twitter, I first went to Twirl. However, now I use TweetDeck to keep track of what my Twitter audience is doing and the Twitter world in general. I no longer have to go to my Twitter page. I simply view the TweetDeck on my desktop.
Overall, what amazes me about Twitter is that so much of what I need done can be freely automated. I can use Mr. Tweet as my personal networking assistant to tell me who is following me that I need to follow back. Mr. Tweet can also tell me, based on my own data, who I need to be following that is NOT following me. Then, there is Socialtoo. This app will automatically follow those folks who are following me and remove me from folks who have stopped following me. It also tells me who the new folks are who are following me, the folks who have stopped following me and the last message I sent them.
Since I have begun automating my Tweeting process, I have seen my number of followers sky-rocket. I highly recommend that Ryzers automate their Tweeting as much as possible. The automation process does not make your Tweeting any less personal. It simply empowers you to reach out and grow your audience more effectively and efficiently.
